Betany Coffland, mezzo-soprano's voice has been hailed as "powerful", "vibrant" and "lustrous" while her performances are described as "a joy to watch", "sassy and elegant" and "wowing the audience". Having performed with many prestigious musical groups these past 14 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, Betany Coffland recently moved to Helsinki, Finland.

Ms. Coffland has appeared in many leading high lyric mezzo-soprano roles including Carmen, Dorabella, Siebel, Idamante, Rosina, Angelina, Cherubino, Prince Orlovsky, Olga, and Elle (La Voix Humaine). She has appeared with companies such as Opera San Jose, Festival Opera, Livermore Valley Opera, West Bay Opera, and Opera Idaho. Ms. Coffland also often sings as a soloist with orchestra and has sung with the Juneau Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Diablo Symphony Orchestra, Mendocino Festival Orchestra, Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, and the Pacific Chamber Orchestra among others.

A graduate of The Juilliard School and New England Conservatory of    Music, she received the Bori Grant for foreign music study in the Czech language where she studied in Prague. Ms. Coffland was a prize winning finalist in both the 2010 and 2013 Irene Dalis Competition and the East Bay Opera League Competition. She won the Grand Prize at the Margaret Kimball Competition with Rimrock Opera, and First Place in the Treasure Valley Concerto Competition.

In the 2019/2020 season Ms. Coffland sang the role of Elizabeth Bennet in Kirke Mechem’s new opera Pride and Prejudice for the World Concert Premiere with The Redwood Symphony, the title role of the new opera Artemisia by composer Laura Schwendinger, the mezzo-soprano soloist in Stacy Garrop’s Oratorio Terra Nostra with The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, and the alto soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at The Mendocino Music Festival and with the Diablo Symphony Orchestra.

2018/2019 season included Ms. Coffland performing as Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus with Festival Opera, the alto soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Bear Valley Festival Orchestra, the alto soloist in Beethoven’s Mass in C with The Diablo Symphony Orchestra and she presented a solo recital with Festival Opera. 

The 2017/2018 season began with Ms Coffland performing both the soprano II and alto solos in Bach’s B Minor Mass with the Mendocino Festival Orchestra. She sang as the alto soloist in the Oakland Symphony’s performance of Rossini’s Stabat Mater, as the alto soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with The Camellia Symphony, the alto soloist in Bach’s B Minor Mass with the California Bach Society, as well as the alto soloist in Mozart’s Missa Brevis with the Valley Concert Chorale. 

The 2016/2017 included Ms. Coffland debut with The Oakland Symphony as the alto soloist in Bruckner’s Te Deum, she performed Resphighi's chamber masterpiece, Il Tramonto with Ensemble SF and the alto solo in Handel’s Messiah with The Pacific Chamber Orchestra. A favorite notable performance that season included singing the role of Sprechstimme in Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire with the chamber orchestra Espressivo.

An intrepid student of chamber repertoire, Ms. Coffland enjoys combining hand selected lesser known and new works with classics to create enchanting recitals which have captivated audiences in California, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Missouri, Kansas, Idaho and New York. As a soloist she has performed in prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and Boston's historic Jordan Hall.
