American-Finnish mezzo-soprano Betany Coffland’s voice has been hailed as "powerful", "vibrant" and "lustrous" while her performances are described as "a joy to watch", "sassy and elegant" and "wowing the audience". Having performed with many prestigious musical groups in the San Francisco area for over a decade, Betany Coffland recently moved to Helsinki, Finland.

In 2024, Ms. Coffland was named a recipient for a Finlandia Foundation Grant and in the spring of 2025, she traveled to the US to present In Concert: A Remigration Story with pianist Alan Johnson featuring composers from America and the Nordics. Other 2024-2025 performance highlights include a solo recital in Helsinki with pianist Collin Hansen at the Villa Gyllenberg, debuting with Cantores Minores as the alto soloist in Bach’s Christmas Cantata and singing John Harbison’s Mirabai Songs with Ensemble Ibis in Miami, Florida.

Ms. Coffland has appeared in many leading high lyric mezzo-soprano roles including Carmen, Dorabella, Siebel, Idamante, Rosina, Angelina, Cherubino, Prince Orlovsky, Olga, and Elle (La Voix Humaine). She has performed with companies such as Opera San Jose, Festival Opera, Livermore Valley Opera, West Bay Opera, and Opera Idaho. She also frequently performs with orchestras as a soloist and in recent seasons she’s sung with The Juneau Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Symphony Silicon Valley, The Diablo Symphony Orchestra, the Mendocino Festival Orchestra, Camillia Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Chamber Orchestra, and The Bear Valley Festival Orchestra among others.

Her passion to support new music has helped bring innovative contemporary music to life such as the role of Elizabeth Bennet in Kirke Mechem’s new opera Pride and Prejudice, the title role of the new opera Artemisia by composer Laura Schwendinger, the mezzo-soprano soloist in Stacy Garrop’s Oratorio Terra Nostra with The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra and The San Francisco Choral Society. In recital, she is also a champion of new and lesser-known works and has recently programmed contemporary composers such as Kaija Saariaho, Shawn Crouch, Kristian Attila, Stacy Garrop, Tapani Lansio, Daniel Felsenfeld and Libby Larsen.

A graduate of The Juilliard School and New England Conservatory of  Music, she also attended the Aspen School of Music. She received the Bori Grant for foreign music study in the Czech language where she studied in Prague. Ms. Coffland was a prize winning finalist in the East Bay Opera League Competition and twice in the Irene Dalis Competition. She also won the Grand Prize at the Margaret Kimball Competition with Rimrock Opera, and First Place in the Treasure Valley Concerto Competition. Betany has also sung on the stages as a soloist at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and Boston's historic Jordan Hall.
